How much of an advantage...

Would it be to learning Nuke? I have been doing a bit of research and don't really see too many users who work with the program, so I'm just wondering if its at least worth investigating. I think throb is an awesome comp artist or VFX supervisor and want to purchase his training DVD's but I'm a bit worried about how many facilities actaully use Nuke. From what I have learned so far, it has many features that either surpass Shake, Fusion and just about competes in the realm of a Flame system. This all might of been expalined before but I am very serious in becoming a compositor, I understand that it doesn't matter really in the software its more about being creative. I just would like to broaden my knowledge of compositing applications in an event of houses using different packages.

though i guess the bigger question is how many large facilities are using nuke - it seems like shake has much larger market share and digital fusion is becoming a amazing tool and has great market penetration... and of course discreet holds the to spot...

I can speak about my dvds and say that dvd 2 has a full working composite from a real commercial job. i spend an hour walking you through what was done and why. if you're looking to learn compositing, that should help you along. it has greenscreen work and all cg background compositing.

dvd1 is more on how to work nuke so it may not be as helpful if you only get that dvd. while i am happy with dvd1 (loads of info in 5.5 hours) i think dvd2 has really good compositing training material on it. people that have used these dvds tend to agree. i have asked their honest opinion and they seem to really get what's going on with comp after they go through those.

am i biased...sure. would i try to sell you a product i didn't stand behind. no way.

Thank you throb! I'm getting your DVD 2 today. I do see a trend of artist and studios who are moving towards Nuke. Question: What version of Nuke is being taught in the DVD, and will it make a difference as far as features from old to new? The reason I ask is becuase I'm just wondering since the version of Nuke is up to 4.5. Would the demo also be at version 4.5?

the version i cover is 4.3 and while the UI has changed, you can make it very close to the 4.3 interface. the toolset has not really changed (maybe some improvements) so for nuke instruction, i think the dvd is still very valid.
the compositing process i show you is valid for nearly anything but of course it's nuke-centric.

I just purchased the DVD, looking forward to learning some exciting things! What I like most about the DVD is the fact that the actual footage from spots you have completed is what we are working with. I think thats the best way to learn.

Hey Throb!

I watched 2 lectures of the Nuke in production DVD last night and I must say I wish I had nuke in front of me as we speak! I mean watching you go over the first comp and seeing how easy it is to do basic tasks make nuke a very efficient program. Primatte works extremely well from what I see, and the way you have the nodes setup make it easy to follow along with. I'm trying to work in shake while watching the tutorials just have to figure out what one node means in Nuke that it means in Shake. Other than that I wish it came with a demo version of Nuke in the DVD. Wonder if D2 would consider an educational version since the news from NAB about an educational version of Fusion? Well back to the lessons...very nice stuff indeed, I'm very happy with my purchase.
