I think a WWII sequence a la Dogfights or Saving Private Ryan would be cool. It gives the artists plenty of opportunity to use all different effects from Live to 3D and styles as well.

just a heads up guys the next challenge is going to be WAY COOL and leans heavily on the 'new type of challenge' thread here
http://www.vfxtalk.com/forum/new-typ...nge-t7117.html
me thinks you all are going to love it - if it works out well we can start the second series of mini challenges...
gotta say the oracle challenge worked out well - any ideas for the next one?
Hey Jah! I just wanted to say that the oracle challenge is awesome!! And its really cool that you managed to get some live footage for us to work with to
By the way. Are you gonna start a junior challenge? That would be great for people like me thats still learning to composit.![]()
How about recreating a war scene? You know, it would be cool if we had say, 2-3 months to do the challenge, but we had to shoot our own elements and do visual effects. Then, we could not only utilize VFX, but also practical fx. Just throwin somthing out there...
Ya. But I think it would be awesome to do a challenge where we had to shoot, edit, and do the visual effects.
Well nothing is stopping you from doing that anyway.
It's just that (and here I go repeating my mantra over and over again) it will make it pretty difficult to judge a challenge like that on it's VFX merits. When you have to go out and shoot it also becomes a 'who's the best producer/director/actor with the most friends who will work for free" kind of challenge.
There are plenty of those on the 'net as well. It's just that this is www.VFXTalk.com and not www.mycoolshortmoviewithsomevfxinittalk.com
How about having a footage of a city shot from a moving car.. The challenge is to create chaos. Either flood the city, burn it, erapt it with earthquare and burning lava, lightning storms, meteor showers, etc..
The provided footage will have to be shot at the early morning to have the least traffic as possible. well times square is a bad example for that..![]()

that would be cool.
Unless you're allowed to use the footage from 'Vanilla Sky' where they have a completely empty Times Square.well times square is a bad example for that..

maybe a refecence still (photo) shot will do, and then animate it.
Just some thoughts,
1)I think footage should be provided in community since everybody won't be able to go out and shoot.
2) The challenge can be approachable by 3D artist and 2D artist.
3) It should be straight forward and gives opportunity to show diverse skills so anybody could show their best part.
I mean anybody could take part in it, whether the artist be mattepainter, FX artist or compositor. I believe there is high participants in 308 because of this reason.
