    hey guys,

just submitted my WIP in the WIP forum, just one question - does this shot have to be set at night... or can it be set in day time... I know the shots from Ghost rider are night shots... but fire can look cool in daylight too...

what do you think? or should i just stick to night look?

    Cheers,

    HaZ

"showreel/shot breakdowns" Here you can watch amazing effects used for the torch man.

The official rules say the last day of each month, this challenge says August 30th but August has 31 days. Which is correct?

Its great that the challenges are up again and all (big kudos to the men and women behind the scenes here), but the last couple seem to have been heavily skewed towards a 3D solution to the challenges.

Now I don't know about others here but I'm absolutely crap at 3D and to be honest have no real desire to learn it - I'm treading water so much of the time just finishing comping jobs. Practically speaking its also pretty rare for a comping guy to have to cross over to 3D, leastways from my experience. And for me the beauty of VFXTalk was always that it was compositing-focused with a little 3d around the fringes. As opposed to say CGTalk, which is pretty much the opposite.

I'm not saying the bridge, rider and transformer challenges can't be done solely with 2D software - there were many excellent entries that proved otherwise. But I think at the end of the day the tasks lend themselves best to a 3D solution, as we're dealing with some pretty serious transformations in a 3D space.

They're great fun, thanks a bunch for all the organisation and setting up the polls, webspace, judging, prizes and all the rest that goes with it, only don't forget us 2D folk.

I'm just wondering, how come the voting page is not hyperlinked at the main page? Instead the submission page is still linked.
It's been 3 days and only 20 votes. Seems like not too many ppl are exposed to that poll.

Thanks for pointing that out Dreamie. The voting link is fixed and we will continue the vote for a further 3 days to make up. Voting will now end on the 11th September!

For the most part it very much has become the "VFX 3D" challenge, and it looks like the latest challenge will keep pushing things in that direction. I think the administrators tried reigning things in during the first challenge, but to little avail.

    Hi Mike,

I want to reassure you that we are here to listen to you and what you would like/need from VFXTalk. I assure you that there is a very special reason why this challenge has been chosen which I currently cannot reveal. It was going to be to Transform an image, (a truck,) into a Transformer, but we felt that that would be unachievable for most in 2D which is why we chose the teaser idea...it can literally be whatever you bring to us and hopefully caters for all in that sense.

Please believe me when I say that all of you are thought about...I offer this challenge to all of you!!! tell me what you want and you will get it. Ask and you shall receive. What challenge would you like to see?

In the meantime, I assure you that this challenge has something special instore and I would encourage you to give it your best shot!

    Forever listening

Look forward to seeing whats behind the Transformer challenge!

As for what type of challenges I know at work I spend 80% of my time either tracking, keying, making supplied 3D look less plastic or rotoing.

This isn't my submission, but I made this last month.

    Windows Media (High)
    Windows Media (Low)

    QuickTime (High)
    QuickTime (low)

I thought about using some of this and cutting it down to 10 seconds but that would have been impossible. Plus I'm tired of that.

Wow JesterJJZ that was slick! VFXTalk Oracle, with this "something special in mind," would you suggest not doing a spoof/funny Transformers trailer?
