The biggest mistake people make with matte painting or comping is "imagining" it all. It's much better to find a real world reference and work from there.

Browse the web for a pic that reminds you of what you want to create, study the light, shadow, haze, aerial perpective and all that stuff, then apply those lessons to your pic.

    Good luck.

since the biggest problem is those shadows why dont you just flip the image and that way the shadow will be in the right spot?

i dont know just an idea...

Well since you're just starting out in digital matte painting, you might want to post your WIP's on Mattepainting.org instead of here. I think you'll find more help in your learning there. Good luck!

Yes, if you take your Cathedral Layer and FLIP that your shadows will match the other better.

Then take a look at how colours and contrast change with distance in a real image.

Mattepainting.org is definitely a good place to go for advice.

I think the perspective of the building in the front (to the right) is kind of off. The buildings in the background should be less contrasting than the buildings in the front. You can use the gradient tool in Photoshop to make the buildings in the background more misty. This will create atmospheric perspective to the whole painting.

The church in the BG is really sharp - as is the arc in the front - the houses in the middle are softer - that's a very strange lens

you should also post in laborganika.org which is ran by Alp Alpinter whos worked on tonnes of hollywoodmovies.
Also checkout the Gnomon matte paintings dvds by Dusso and Dylan Cole, very helpful.
Finally, there is a mattepainting subject you can take in www.fxphd.com, its called 'Photoshop for Production' or something like that.

    Good luck!
