SuSE, RH or Cent, and sometimes fedora. I voted Cent.
Good luck with ubuntu in production. Ubuntu is made for Granny who wants to see photos of her grandkids and thus has some of the weakest repos around. Kiss your Nuke support goodbye with ubuntu.
Edti: Gentoo is used a hell of a lot too in the UK, generally where there is broadcast magic happening on xsi and houdini.

Ubuntu work just fine with Nuke. That is what all the machines at Weta had on them. Actually to be exact it was Kubuntu which is just the Kde strain of Ubuntu.Originally Posted by teatime

Weakest Repos? Last I checked it actually installed all of the packages necessary to run Nuke, Maya, MentalRay Server and Shake out of the box. It was the only distro which did that last time I built a pipeline.
I've seen a monalisa drawn with ms paint. I'd be carefull with the word "crap". I have nothing against a linux distro that is usable without shell and bashscript hacking... so I have nothing against a linux distro which feels like a usable os for any user. at the end it doesn't matter to anyone but the admins who have to support the systems since all you need in production is to launch your app of choice and work away. Any linux distro should be fine from this point of view.

That's 3 products out of many. XSI users have never been formally invited to the Debian party. It's a good thing the mainstream apps like Nuke and Maya do work out of the box, ubuntu is very easy to use, ease of access = more users and potential custoemrs!
I admit I have run a rented nuke license on an aged P4 box using Ubuntu because I couldn't stick XP.
However I am contracted a lot to move desktops and servers off of Debian/ubuntu to RH, cent, fedora and solaris.
It depends on the solutions you intend to provide. Well done Weta, but last time I checked Weta have very good internal engineers and technicians. For smaller outfits Ubuntu is not a support-friendly option for vendors and resellers, you know...where customers goto for help?
Those who buy off shelf and freelancers use certified solutions because they don't have the time or resources to support unsupported operating systems or hardware.
And Yes...Ubuntu was made for Granny in mind, so sayeth Mr Shuttleworth.
"It works" doesn't cut it when time is money in production "It's tried tested and supported" equals good ROI.

XSI's support across Windows, Linux and OSX has been pathetic. "Multi-Platform"... barely.
They're doing better. But using an application which has spectacularly picky hardware requirements doesn't mean a distro is worse overall.
Considering most people run Maya or Max and or Nuke, Shake or Fusion then the granny app is probably best for them.
The same could be said for Avid. Great application but look at the hardware requirements and buy EXACTLY what's in the recommended system components if you want it to work right. That's not to say an AMD processor isn't good, but don't expect it to work with software which is picky and designed for intel.
You actually call support at Microsoft, Apple, Redhat, Novel, etc...when you are having OS issues? Why in the world would you waste your time doing that? I can find the answer so much faster on msg boards and the support forums then spending hours working my way through the many levels of phone support.
You are greatly mistaken. Most companies I have worked for in visualfx have moved away from Fedora and the "supported" linux distributions. Debian, Ubuntu, Suse(long before it was officially supported) are used by freelancers and companies. The only people who use Fedora are those that know very little about linux.
You must be kidding, that's a silly statement. I read in linuxjournal some time a go that Weta used a modify Fedora distro for their workstations, i don't think they know very little about Linux.
My bad, it was an over generalization. I know lots of places that use Red Hat WS. It just tends to be less experienced people use Fedora simply because Autodesk has that as their top supported linux. Personally I find it a fairly miserable linux distribution compared to others.
BTW Weta uses mostly Kubuntu as of a year and a half ago when I was there.
i think it doesn´t matter which distro you use as long as you know the fundamentals about linux, of course if you are a system admin the thing it´s totally different. I didn´t know that Weta switched to Debian based distro (Kubuntu), i think their easy use is calling the attention more and more.
it is the other way round. Companies switch to fedora or cent because they are redhat based but community distros. So you get RH goodness (minus things like JBOSS), but without support fees. The techies learn RH, and switch to something free.
honestly, I have used RedHat, OpenSuSe and Ubuntu....and Ubuntu was the ONLY distro that i was able to get all my apps running and didnt feel like I would kill somebody setting it up. Sure ease of use and all the admin features of every other distro may be detestable to those that want terminal all the way......but if you would rather make money than spend it on someone setting up your distro than Ubuntu is a great choice.
