    I had to take a short break and have a little suggestion. Do not try to use Maya polygon modeler for serious purposes. I cant belive such advanced package has got such a crappy, untuitive polygon modeler. I am trying now to extract inside surface of the cup from the rest, and Maya constatly crashes while executing the command ! And it is not the first time using 'extract'.
    I give up . I will never use it, exept dummy planes and cubes. These work fine. Such a pity.
    Cheers !

    ps I have seen some possiblities of Lightwave modeler. Comparing with Maya ... no... it cannot even be compared.

    i use maya poligon modeling constantly and never have a problem with it. Ever concider the possibility that the problem may be your computer (or you?) and not the fact that it's maya ?

    It seems like a very vague attempt to lean Maya, personally I have worked with Maya for the past 2 months ( which is also my first 3D package) and I am trilled with the tools - I might not be able to compare it with other 3D packages, but from how I have advanced in the past 2 months I am seeing tons of possibilities in Maya poly modeling... But it would be easier to judge weather or not it's you hardware or Maya that has a bug... thinks happens he ...

    I don't know if this helps. But a couple of suggestions that might help. All supposed to be seen as sepearate "solutions" and not to be done in a sequence... If one doesn't work, try next. =)

    * Delete history on object.
    * Select all vertex's and merge. Be sure to set the distance to a value that wouldn't screw things up. Or merge sections... Then delete history.
    * Duplicate object without connections.
    * Try the cleanup function in one of the poly menus.
    * Export object to obj. Import in fresh scene.

    Yes, not a "proper" solution to the problem but maybe some tip that might get you going forward atleast. =/ maybe you already tried them though.

    what's wrong with maya's modeling?
    I had trouble when I started modeling in maya, but as I got more experience, I ran into less and less problems.

    Allmost every game developing company out there uses maya's polymodelling capabillity so ...go figure.Maybe only max is still more popular and more used than maya in game production .Some people say that the best polymodeling 3d package is xsi.Anyway ,i model in Maya for fun for about 2 years and i've never had a problem.All the problems i've ever had with maya were caused by bad vga drivers.

    Hey come on man... this is supposed to be a constructive community. So what if he's new? We all had to start from somewhere. Spare us your negativity and insults, please.

    I'm not saying that I agree with the original poster, but everyone else was taking a reasonable approach and asking why he was having problems with it.
